Description

Truly endless, heat resistant, needle felts have been developed for use in extremely high temperature applications. They are widely used throughout the aluminum extruding process, as a substitute for wood strip and plumbago.

These materials possess a unique combination of characteristics including excellent resistance to prolonged high temperature exposure, excellent abrasion resistance and a smooth surface which does not scratch aluminum profiles.

Fiber Construction for Felts

Zylon-PBO
Temperature Resistance: Continuous: 750o F (4000 C), Max: 1,1000 F (600o C)
The material will lose weight, turn brown and experience reduced service life, if placed in contact with aluminum profiles at a temperature of z1,100o F (600o C) for a period of time longer than ten minutes. PBO is a thermoset material. It will not contaminate the aluminum profile.

Kevlar-K and Kevlar+Carbon-KC
Temperature Resistance: Continuous: 480oF (250oC), Max: 930oF (500oC)
The material will lose weight, turn brown and experience reduced service life, if placed in contact with aluminum profiles at a temperature of z930oF (500oC) for a period of time (longer than ten minutes). Kevlar is a thermoset material. It will not contaminate the aluminum profile. A 70/30 blend of Kevlar and Carbon is available that increases thermal conductivity and can increase aluminum cooling rate.

Nomex-N
Temperature Resistance: Continuous: 390oF (200oC), Max: 535oF (280oC)
The material will lose weight , turn brown and experience reduced shelf life if placed in contact with aluminum profiles at a temperature of z480oF (250oC) for a period of time longer than 10 minutes. Nomex is a thermoset material. It will not melt or contaminate the aluminum profile.

Polyester-P
The highest temperature resistance of this material is 390oF (200oC0. The material WILL melt and contaminate the aluminum profile, if the temperature of aluminum is higher than 390oF (200oC)

Silica resin treatment
Zylon and Kevlar felts for pads and tubes can be treated with Silica resin to produce a harder felt. These harder felts are often used for heavier profiles and also provide more abrasion resistance. Silica contamination of the extrusion is possible.

Tension Members
There are three types of tension members used in Al Felt materials:

  • Kevlar-K – Temperature resistance: 930oF (500oC), Strength: 25N/mm at 1% elongation
  • Nomex-N – Temperature resistance: 480oF (250oC) for intermittent contact, Strength: 10N/mm at 15 elongation
  • Polyester-P – Temperature resistance: 390of (200oC0 for intermittent contact, Strength: 15N/mm at 1% elongation
