BHPB chose Outokumpu
BHP Billiton has selected Outokumpu Technology to provide high-efficiency flotation machinery for the expansion of its Cannington mine in northwest Qld. Installation will start mid-year of 11 Outokumpu’s OK-38 conventional flotation cells with support structures and air piping to expand the lead, silver and zinc mine from the nominal rate of 2.1Mtpa to 2.4Mtpa. JV Engineering in Perth is making the flotation cells –the latest project in Cannington’s ongoing partnership with Outokumpu Technology and Fraser Osborn Consulting Engineers, Townsville. A TankCell 100 Pb fines rougher complete with new high shear stator designed for sub-10 micron particle recovery will complement the floatation cells.

Managers buy Waratah
The Local Government Superannuation Scheme has led a management buy out of Australian mining services business, Waratah Engineering. The Newcastle-based company provides a range of services to the underground coal mining industry in Australia including equipment hire, machine rebuilds, spare parts supply and general repair and maintenance.

Bucyrus’ South Milwaukee, US manufacturing and administration facility has been awarded certification to the new ISO9001:2000 standard. Bucyrus has been certified to ISO9001 standards for many years. The company says qualification to the new 2000 standard represents its ongoing commitment to customers in the surface mining industry.

Maintenance pact
Maintenance software developer Mainpac and Sydney-based consultancy Covaris have signed an alliance to foster best practice in asset and maintenance management among the 800 worldwide Mainpac users, among them many mining companies. Under the alliance, Covaris will provide consulting services covering equipment and system reliability, life-cycle cost planning and asset management to users of Mainpac asset and maintenance management software.

Mineral liberation
Mintek and BHPB recently signed an agreement to facilitate the purchase of a Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) from JKTech, Australia. The instrument will be located at Mintek's laboratories in South Africa. BHPB’s support is part of its anticipated ongoing relationship with Mintek in mineralogical investigations -particularly through BHPB’s Johannesburg Technology Centre. The MLA, developed by Philips Electron Optics and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre in Brisbane, is a new tool for rapid and accurate mineral liberation analysis.

Plant contract award
Kimberley Diamond Company has awarded a contract for the construction of an additional production plant to be situated next to Ellendale Pipe 9. Mine Plant Constructions has been awarded the $3.351m fixed lumps some contract. The plant will provide a throughput rate of 300tph, or 2.2Mtpa. The terms of the contract demand the plant will be fully erected by December 1 followed by a two-month commissioning period. Steady state production should be achieved by February 2004.

Drivetrain Australia’s manufacturing arm, Fluid Systems Group (FSG, has been appointed a distributor of Canada-based Long Manufacturing’s automotive thermal management systems. Long Manufacturing is a unit of Dana Corporation, an international supplier of fluid management products and systems. FSG Melbourne plant has production facilities for making and supplying fluid hose assemblies and fittings to the automotive, truck and off-highway markets.

ABB accredited in Qld
ABB Australia's component service repair facility in Brisbane, a division of Automation Technology Products, has been awarded an accreditation through NATA to repair hazardous area machines. The accreditation provides underground mining companies with a Qld repair service for their machines. The NATA accreditation is for the in-service inspection including overhaul and repair of standard and modified electrical equipment for use in hazardous atmospheres Code AS/NZS 3800 Ex d, Ex e, Ex n, Ex p, and DIP motors and terminal boxes.

Pneumatic actuation and isolation and vehicle air suspensions specialist Air Springs Supply has established a new fully owned branch in WA to expand its national supply and service network. WA Air Springs, headed by manager Allan Shewell, will service mining and processing markets for Airstroke actuators, Airmount isolators, Ride-Rite supplementary suspension systems and industrial air springs as pneumatic actuators and isolators and Marsh Mellow springs for vibrating screens and underground mining vehicle suspensions.
