Titan Resources NL has announced that Jeffrey Gresham has joined the Company as managing director and CEO. Jeff has a distinguished career in exploration and operations. He spent 19 years with WMC from 1974 to 1993 including 9 years in Kambalda, where he progressed from senior exploration geologist to senior mine geologist and then to chief geologist from 1981 to 1985. During this period he had close involvement in the evaluation and mining of all nickel deposits in the Kambalda region including those now held by Titan at Widgiemooltha. He also participated in the discovery, development and rapid expansion of the St Ives gold operations.
After three years as chief geologist, Eastern Operations, which included geological responsibility for the massive Olympic Dam deposit, he moved to WMC’s Canadian subsidiary, Westminer Canada, where he eventually became executive vice president responsible for managing all functions in the corporate office in Toronto.
He replaces William (Bill) J Ryan as who served as CEO and MD for 17 years.
Lawrie Mills, who has had many years of experience in new and used construction and earthmoving equipment in Australia, has joined Komatsu Australia as its south-eastern region regional sales manager, responsible for Komatsu sales in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. For the past six years, Mills has been national sales manager, looking primarily after excavators, for another national supplier of construction and earthmoving equipment. Prior to that, he was five years with one of Australia's largest independent suppliers of used equipment, buying and selling used equipment on the worldwide market.
He started his career in the earthmoving equipment business with Banbury Engineering, which he joined in 1987 as a sales cadet, moving up to a general line sales representative and then territory representative by the time he left there in 1993. Ian MacCowan, Komatsu Australia's south-eastern region general manager, welcomed the appointment saying, "Lawrie has built up a reputation as someone who knows the industry and its people extremely well, with a good understanding of the needs of our customers and future customers. It's great to have him on our team.”
Meanwhile, also at Komatsu, Steve Wylie has been appointed mining manager for the South Eastern Region, covering NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. Wylie, who has worked in the mining industry all his working life, was previously with Coal & Allied, where he spent 22 years – primarily in the NSW black coalfields, but also including a short period in Weipa, far north Queensland. A mining engineer by trade, his most recent job at Coal & Allied was as project co-ordinator for the Mt Thorley-Warkworth mine integration.
Outokumpu CEO Dr Jyrki Juusela will retire at the end of this year. He has been with the Outokumpu Group since 1971 and served as CEO since the beginning of 1992.
Boart Longyear global Drilling Services (DS) product group director Bruce Wood has announced the appointment of two senior executives to lead and grow DS activities in two key territories. They are: Tim Bremner, regional general manager, drilling services, Asia Pacific; and Mike Fitzgerald, regional general manager, drilling services, Sub-Saharan Africa.
Drilling services accounts for a third of Boart Longyear’s global revenue and encompasses a broad collection of surface and underground drilling services that cut across the mining, drilling, construction, geotechnical and environmental sectors. The division operates worldwide with the bulk of its current business in the USA and Canada.
Dr Stephen Grocott, currently manager of process technology and sustainability based at Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, has been appointed global technology manager of minerals separation and hydrometallurgy in BHP Billiton’s Technology Group. He will be based at the Newcastle Technology Centre and will be taking over from Dr Brian Smith who has assumed the role of global manager of science and technology.
The Board of BeMaX has announced the appointment of Bernard Schreiber as chief financial officer of the company. Schreiber is a former partner of international accounting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu where he worked in the corporate finance, audit and consulting services divisions in London, Durban, Melbourne and Brisbane. Schreiber has most recently held the position of manager investments for UniQuest Pty Ltd. The Board said it welcomes Schreiber to the Company in this exciting time as the capital costs for the Pooncarie Project continue to be refined and preparations for the debt and equity financing arrangements for the Pooncarie Project are put in place.
Batavia has announced the appointment of Paul Odd as a director to strengthen the depth of mining and development experience within its Board. Odd is a mining engineer with 40 years experience in Australia and Central Africa in gold, base metals and bauxite operations. Batavia’s chairman, John W Barr, said Odd’s input to the company would be invaluable, as it moved towards mine development.
Barrick Gold Corporation has announced the promotion of Jamie Sokalsky to executive vice president and chief financial officer. Skolasky, SVP and CFO since 1999, joined Barrick in 1993 as treasurer.
“When Jamie joined Barrick we were a North American company. Over the past decade we’ve become a truly global enterprise and Jamie’s contributions to our financial strength have been a major factor in that evolution,” said Greg Wilkins, president and chief executiove officer.
Barrick says it is building new low-cost, long-life mines in highly prospective gold mining districts globally and claims to have the lowest total cash costs of major gold producers, a proven exploration track record and the industry’s only ‘A’-rated balance sheet.
Jubilee Mines NL has announced the appointment to the Board of Phil Lockyer as a non-executive director. Lockyer – a qualified mining engineer and metallurgist with over 40 years technical and management experience in the mining industry, mostly nickel and gold open pit and underground mines in WA – has operated his own mining management consultancy business since 1999.
Most recently, he was acting chief operating officer for gold group Sons of Gwalia Limited for a period of nine months in 2003 and he has been an independent director of zinc producer Perilya Ltd since November 2003.
Lockyer commenced his career with WMC Limited in Kambalda, spending 20 years with the mining group in various roles including general manager – nickel division and eventually as general manager – Western Australian operations in the early 1990s.
He then held a number of other senior executive positions elsewhere in the industry, including as manager of business development for National Mine Management Pty Ltd and as director of operations and projects for Dominion Mining Ltd (1993 to 1995). In 1995 Lockyer was appointed as a director and general manager of operations for leading gold producer Resolute Ltd.
Hill End Gold Limited has announced the retirement of Graham Reveleigh as managing director and is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Bruce as the new managing director to taking effect from 1 July 2004. Reveleigh has been managing director over this past four years, a period which has seen the company move from being a subsidiary of a Canadian-listed company, through an ASX listing and established as a serious mine and field explorer at Hill End.
The commissioning of the Hill End plant, the redevelopment of the underground operations at Hawkins Hill – Reward and the identification of the open pit potential at Red Hill and Clines have been major achievements since listing in July 2003. Bruce has been a director of the company since 2001 and comes to the position with strong corporate, project development and operating experience in Australia, South Africa and Indonesia.
He was previously managing director for Triako Resources Limited and general manager development for Plutonic Resources and has a reputation for the strong growth of resource companies and projects under his leadership.
Services company United Group Limited has appointed Terry Chapman as chief executive of the group’s engineering construction, facilities management and industrial maintenance business, United KG. Chapman joins United KG from his previous role as director and chief executive of Alstom Australia Limited.
Managing director and CEO of United Group Richard Leupen said, “We are delighted to strengthen the leadership of United Group with the appointment of Terry Chapman. He is a well respected industry executive with demonstrated team leadership and project delivery skills and will be a great asset to United Group.

In his previous role, Chapman was responsible for more than 1000 employees and a broad range of projects including a 15-year, $1.5 billion maintenance contract, power installation at Olympic Dam and road tunnels including the Eastern Distributor and rail tunnels such as the Epping to Chatswood line.
