An interactive CD – Prospects: Thrills and Skills in the Mining Industry – designed to promote awareness of the career opportunities in the mining sector among senior high school students, their teachers, careers advisors and parents is available.
The CD was developed by the NSW Minerals Council and the NSW Department of Education and Training’s Centre for Learning Innovation, with funding assistance from the Minerals Council of Australia.
NSWMC Chief Executive, Dr Nikki Williams, described the NSW mining industry as a gateway for a broad spectrum of careers for both men and women.
“The traditional image of miners with blackened faces is a thing of the distant past. For many years now the NSW mining industry has been about innovation, world-leading safety technology and high quality training across multiple professional disciplines and trades.”
Dr Williams said the CD would prove a valuable tool in raising awareness of careers in mining and provide young people with the ability to make informed choices about the necessary study and training required to enter the industry.
“This CD continues the NSW Minerals Council’s commitment to actively promote careers in mining for both men and women, particularly in the fields of mining engineering, geoscience, environmental science, metallurgy and trades.”
Dr Williams said the NSW mining industry was unique in that mining operations were located proximate to major urban areas, providing workers with the opportunity to gain employment without sacrificing lifestyle.
“Our people can live close to the beauty of the stunning NSW coastline, amongst the vineyards or in one of the bustling regional centres of Orange, Dubbo and Parkes, and indeed the beautiful expanses of western NSW, while enjoying the benefits of a rewarding career in the industry.
