As organiser of the prestigious Prospect Awards, Australian Mining is pleased to announce four of its six independent judges for the awards.
The four judges bring a wealth and breadth of experience in the mining industry that spans back to the 1960s. This year they will choose a winner and highly commended from entries in nine categories (please see box for categories and sponsoring companies).
The winners will attend a gala event in Fremantle later this year and the winning entries will be announced in the December issue of Australian Mining.
Nominations are now open and close August 31.

Graham Terrey
Graham Terrey is currently director of Mine Resilience (Australia). He is a mining engineer and was a regulator with what is now the Department of Primary Industries for about 30 years following industry experience and employment at Mt Isa Mines.
From 1996 to 2004 he was director, mine safety with the New South Wales Department of Minerals Resources and statutory chief inspector.
He now engages individually with the mining industry on a number of fronts and is examining the maturing of mine safety regulation.
Professor Peter Lilly
Professor Peter Lilly is the Professor of Mining Engineering and director of the Western Australian School of Mines, Curtin University of Technology.
He is a board member of AusIMM, Australian Prospectors & Miners Hall of Fame, Uniservices Kalgoorlie and the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, and is chair of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines’ Community Reference Group.
He has held positions in mine operations and development, mining research and consulting engineering, and has worked on projects in 15 countries.
Lilly is a Chartered Fellow of AusIMM, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland and the holder of the Corporate Director’s Diploma.
Peter L McCarthy
Peter L McCarthy is managing director of AMC Consultants. He has degrees in Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics, and is a certificated mine manager.
McCarthy has 35 years of experience in the mining industry and has worked on feasibility studies, mine planning and other projects throughout Australia and in NZ, PNG, central Asia, Turkey and Africa.
He spent nine years in underground operations at Broken Hill and subsequently management of several underground exploration and development projects.
He is a non-executive director of Bendigo Mining and a past non-executive director of three public companies, a former director of the Australian Gold Council.
Richard Dewhirst
Richard Dewhirst is group studies manager, resources business unit, at Sinclair Knight Mertz (SKM), Perth.
He has an MBA from the London Business School (1985-1987) and BSc (Hons), Metallurgy with Mining, Nottingham University (1969-1972). He is a fellow of AusIMM(CP) and CEng; MIMMM.
He has over 25 years of experience in technical and line management roles in mineral industries as diverse as iron ore, copper, gold, uranium, diamonds, refractory industrial minerals and silica sand. He has been involved in projects and operations in Africa, Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
