Power carrier conquers Simpson Desert

ADVENTURER Frank Wheeler has completed a gruelling, unassisted crossing of the Simpson Desert, walking 300 kilometres in 14 days behind his Honda Power Carrier.

While the Simpson Desert has attracted its share of adventurers, Frank Wheeler is believed to be the first to make the crossing solo, with the only assistance being the Honda Power Carrier - essentially a walk-behind motorised wheelbarrow with caterpillar style tracks.

The Honda HP450 Power Carrier features a four-stroke, OHV, GXV160 engine rated at 5.5 hp (4 kW) providing a cruising speed of three kilometres per hour.

Sixty-three-year-old Wheeler left Punie Bore near Oodnadatta on August 29 carrying food, 80 litres of fuel, 80 litres of water and safety equipment including a compass, GPS, satellite phone and an emergency beacon for his ambitious trek across Australia’s red heart.

Originally planning to cross the Simpson using camels, the option proved too expensive.

“I then spotted a Honda HP450 Power Carrier and knew immediately this was a better option, as it had a 450kg carrying capacity,” Wheeler said.

Preparing the power carrier for the trek by adding a rack to the tray, Frank also fixed a solar panel, lights and a flag for improved visibility in the dunes.

Honda Power Equipment Manager, Bob Donaldson, said the Power Carrier was usually more at home transporting bricks, timber, sand, aggregate, pavers and debris, but was up to the challenge of a Simpson Desert crossing.

“When Frank Wheeler approached us about using a Power Carrier for the Simpson Desert crossing, we thought it a great opportunity to put our product to the test in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments,” Donaldson said.

“Although not specifically designed for desert crossings, the HP450 is manufactured to endure extended use in the rough, dusty conditions.

“The Power Carrier’s advanced four-stroke GXV160 engine features a cast iron bore sleeve for reliability and longevity, and I imagine Frank appreciated the engine’s easy starting nature, both on a cold desert morning or under the blaring midday sun.”
