Premier Coal has developed community-based programs to convert several former mining operations near Collie into valuable community assets.
These have won the operation the Banksia Environmental Award 2004, The WA State Environmental Award 2004, Highly Commended Prospect Awards Excellence in Environmental Management 2004 and the 2005 Golden Gecko award.
The old Western-5B open cut mine is transformed into the magnificent Lake Kepwari, a 103ha waterway that will soon support water sports, aquaculture, freshwater fishing and tourism.
At the former Western-2 underground mine, the above ground services area is now a driver training and motor sports complex used by the community and the WA Police Service.
At the old Western-5H open cut mine a freshwater aquaculture farm is in operation to research, develop, support and encourage a budding aquaculture industry.
