HepcoMotion’s Australian agent T.E.A. Transmissions presents a case study for the use of DLS3 linear transmission and positioning systems in a burner application. A world leader in linear motion technology, HepcoMotion offers linear motion, circular/rotary motion and gantry solutions.

Halifax-based Rapidflame, a specialist in both standard and special gas burners (and control systems) specified HepcoMotion DLS3 linear transmission and positioning systems on six new burners bound for South America. Ordered by a shipping container manufacturer for its new factory in Chile, the systems will clean and activate container surfaces prior to surface treatment and painting. HepcoMotion components have been specified because of their proven reliability. Very importantly, buying a complete, off-the-shelf mechanical package will save hours in design and specifying time for Rapidflame.

Company director Paul Chadderton explains that the proposed system moves special gas burners over the steel sheets that make up the sides, top and bottom of the shipping containers. The gas flame cleans and activates the surface ready for specialist surface treatment and painting. These finishing operations enable the containers to transport chilled goods.

The six systems destined for the Chile plant measure approximately 4 metres in length by 1 metre wide. The principal design concept for the servo-controlled system is based on an aluminium space frame configuration. Rapidflame turned to HepcoMotion to facilitate the reciprocation movement of the burners back and forth across the large steel sheets.

According to Mr Chadderton, two DLS3 linear actuators were used on each burner with one connected to the servomotor, and the other on the rail that takes the load.

Key features of HepcoMotion DLS3 linear motion system include belt-driven linear modules; AC motor/inverter package; a range of compact planetary gearboxes for use with servomotors; hardened and precision ground slideway; double row cap sealed bearings for long system life and low maintenance; polyurethane steel-reinforced belt for minimum stretch and high speed capability; and quiet, trouble-free operation from proven V-bearing technology.

Rapidflame is now actively looking to market the systems built for Chile to the rest of industry, particularly the automotive sector. All burners will feature HepcoMotion technology.
