September is the month for the annual spring cleaning at home or the workplace.

It is important to clean and maintain areas such as offices, grounds and warehouses to reduce risk of injury and illness; spring cleaning also offers an opportunity to stock up on office supplies, reduce wear and tear and replace broken or worn out items. Getting the worksite clean and tidy will go a long way in improving health and productivity as well as customer satisfaction.

Top 10 tips from Signet to get started on spring clean

1. To ensure kitchen hygiene, create a kitchen cleaning roster for internal staff to follow during business hours, encouraging everyone to participate in the effort. Stock up on kitchen cleaning supplies before starting off the campaign.

2. Set a time during the month when staff clean and organise their workstations. This will not only introduce lean practices but also help dispose of any unnecessary items and increase efficiencies.

3. Clean high traffic surfaces regularly including computer mouse and keyboard, phones, kitchen and bathroom sinks, taps and handles, microwave door handles, fridge door handles, water fountains, elevator buttons and vending machine buttons.

4. Stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, hand cleaners and rubbish bags and make them easily accessible for internal staff so that the bathrooms can be refilled and maintained at all times.

5. Remove unpleasant odours from the bathroom, office or warehouse with Glen 20 or an automatic wall-mounted air freshener.

6. Introduce a clean hands campaign at the workplace by installing hand sanitiser dispensers in high traffic areas. This will help minimise the spread of germs and illness around the office.

7. Make sure PPE and safety equipment at the workplace are in top condition and replace anything that is damaged or unusable.

8. Confirm that the first aid box is fully stocked with essentials that are still within date.

9. Minimise clutter around the workplace and keep all areas organised with labels, signs, trays and cupboards.

10. Refresh the premises by re-marking lines around the car park, warehouse and general site.
