Packaging tape is a staple in many warehouses and offices around the country. With an extensive range of sizes, colours, and adhesives to choose from — getting it wrong can be a costly mistake to fix.

To help you make the right decision, we have asked our experts for some of the important factors to consider.

Tip# 1 – Distance and handling

Are the goods being taken across the road, to a neighbouring state, to the other side of the country, or overseas?

Depending on the distance, there may be different transit times, and your selected packaging tape needs to be able to handle that time and the potentially rough transport conditions. For longer distances, such as interstate, a tape that has high levels of adhesion, which creates a stronger bond is required.

Select a hot melt or natural rubber adhesive for a secure stick.

Tip# 2 – Storage

Storage conditions are another vital factor to think about when selecting a packaging tape — this includes storage of the unused rolls of tape and storage of the final package the tape is used on. As warehouses can fluctuate in temperature depending on the time of year and state, it is hard to foresee how the tape will perform when being stored for longer periods of time.

For example, acrylic adhesive can be affected by heat and humidity and can cause the packaging tape to lose its “sticky” qualities. When the tape then needs to be used, it won’t perform as expected or possibly at all.

Select a packaging tape with more tack and adhesion if your item will be stored for a longer time period.

Tip# 3 – Types of cartons

Cardboard is not restricted to only one type. There are a number of different types of cardboard including waxy, glossy, prime, and recycled. When comparing packaging tapes, while they may not look different, they do perform differently on the kind of cardboard they are being stuck to.

For most cartons, synthetic rubber and acrylic adhesives are a common solution. However, as the fibres found in recycled cartons are shorter, it means that there is less surface area for the packing tape to adhere to. As a result, a higher performing adhesive is required.

Select a natural rubber adhesive for recycled cardboard boxes. If waxy or prime types of cardboard are used as well, it may mean that different packaging tapes are needed for the different types of cardboard.

Tip# 4 – Cold temperatures or environments

Just as heat and humidity can affect an adhesives performance, so can the cold. This means that not all packaging tapes are suitable for colder environments or temperatures.

If items will be shipped or stored in colder temperatures, water-based acrylic adhesive tapes provide the required adhesion.

When it comes to choosing the right type of adhesive and packaging tape for you, there are a number of other factors that can be considered — such as price and brand reputation. However, ensuring that your chosen tape can handle the above factors is much more important to its performance.
