Boom gates from Rotech Group Pty Ltd have been installed in the vicinity of a new helicopter pad located at the Tamworth Hospital to manage vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area.

Built as part of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment project close to the hospital’s emergency department, the new helipad is better positioned to provide quick access to transport patients for urgent treatment.

However, the new convenient location of the helicopter pad at Tamworth Hospital also created unique challenges for traffic management. Smith Street, a busy local roadway is situated between the helipad and the hospital. Helicopters create a downdraft as high as 89km when they land or take off, presenting a constant danger to both vehicles and pedestrians from flying debris.

The proximity of the helipad to Smith Street meant any vehicle or pedestrian in the vicinity would be adversely affected by the strong downdraft when an emergency helicopter was trying to land or take off. Given that time was a critical factor, a quick response solution was required to safely manage access to the common traffic area between the aircraft and motor vehicles.

Rotech worked with Steensen Varming to install two boom gates along Smith Street, effectively stopping both the outgoing and incoming traffic on the road when a helicopter was in the vicinity. Pedestrian warning lights were also installed at appropriate locations.

A long range transmitter fitted to the helicopter activates a range of equipment from up to 20km away, including the existing helipad lights, wind sock lights, floodlights, pedestrian warning lights, and ambulance warning light.

The boom gates come down 30 seconds after the warning lights are activated, allowing any traffic midstream to pass beyond the danger zone before the helicopter reaches the helipad.

Rotech’s solution is playing an important role in getting patients quickly and safely from the helipad into the emergency department of the hospital for treatment.
