Rockwell Automation and OSIsoft supply BHP Billiton with enterprise historian solution

Supplier News

Rockwell Automation and OSIsoft will install an enterprise historian at BHP Billiton’s iron ore operations in Australia to provide greater visibility into production data.

The enterprise historian, a production intelligence platform, will combine Factory Talk Historian Site Edition (SE) software from Rockwell Automation and the PI System from OSIsoft to provide BHP Billiton with visibility of real-time and historical production data across the company’s integrated supply chain of mines, rail and port facilities. Reporting and trending tools will provide operators insight into performance parameters with the information helping identify opportunities to reduce variability, lower costs and improve productivity in operations and across the supply chain.

Ryan Cahalane, director of Software Product Management, Rockwell Automation explains that an enterprise historian solution takes data and turns it into information. Many producers are working on how best to leverage an intelligent automation infrastructure and the big data it produces, which is being outlined in smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0 and other global, manufacturing-modernisation initiatives.

According to Cahalane, the BHP Billiton enterprise-wide effort to standardise iron ore data collection, storage and visualisation will be a major step toward smarter production because it creates one version of the truth. Companies, for instance, can use the solution to compare disparate assets and operations, and transform this information into operating knowledge and wisdom.

Brett Higgins, OSIsoft vice president of Asia Pacific comments that the Rockwell Automation and OSIsoft combination brings together the best of industrial and enterprise data management with the solution seamlessly leveraging the company’s existing investments at a plant and enterprise level, and pulling in new information from mobile assets.

He added that only an enterprise historian solution can put the huge quantity of data coming from BHP Billiton’s iron ore operations to good use.

The design of the enterprise historian solution is underway with installation to be completed by the end of 2016.
