ProDetec installs GD1 tuneable laser diode H2S toxic detectors in FPSO upgrade

ProDetec delivered twenty Simtronics GD1 tuneable laser diode Open Path H2S toxic detectors for an FPSO upgrade project in New Zealand. The project was successfully commissioned by the end user recently without the presence of ProDetec or Simtronics technicians on site. The end user team was able to set up and commission all of the toxic detectors without any problems.

Supplied with a wireless interface kit, the GD1 Open Path H2S sensor allows the system to be set up via a laptop, tablet or a smartphone with internet access. All Simtronics products are user-friendly and easy to interface and work with without the need for specialist engineers or technicians.

Open path detectors are increasingly being used for toxic gas detection as they increase the probability of detecting gas accumulations when compared to fixed point detectors.

Simtronics’ GD1 tuneable laser diode H2S toxic detectors were evaluated by the customer and selected based on a number of technical factors.

The selectivity of laser based gas detection, and the fact that one laser may be used to cover both target and reference gas such as CO2 in the case of Simtronics GD1, give a very low ‘probability of failure on demand’, allowing the detectors to be employed with high availability and minimal maintenance in SIL rated systems.

The technology at work in the GD1 tuneable laser diode H2S toxic gas detectors is fail-safe in design and complies with the requirements of modern safety systems, including independent SIL certification.
