Mettler Toledo has introduced a new Hazardous Area Catalogue to ensure the correct selection of weighing systems for use in industrial plant operations.

Processing facilities in chemical and petrochemical industries are exposed to potentially explosive atmospheres; therefore, weighing systems for use in these hazardous areas must be designed and installed as per regulatory safety guidelines.

Fires and explosions are the two major safety concerns in industrial plants. The areas in which an explosive gas atmosphere exists or is likely to exist are defined as ‘Hazardous Locations’. Process industries operating in hazardous locations have an obligation to conduct a risk analysis or hazard and operability study (HAZOP) and to classify their hazardous areas. Area classification will provide a description of the hazardous material that may be present so that the appropriate equipment is selected and safely installed.

Weighing components and systems, including weigh modules, load cells and scales and terminals, are essential for many processing industries. Such equipment should satisfy the general requirements of Electrical Norms (EN 60079-0) and the specific requirements of the respective type of protection for which it is designed. In fact, additional safety measures might be required in harsh environments.

Mettler Toledo offers the most advanced intrinsic safe weighing technology for weigh modules, weigh platforms and control terminals. Designed according to the most advanced protection and intrinsic safety technology, these weighing systems come with various global approvals including ATEX, FM, IECEx, NEPSI and GOST.

Mettler Toledo has developed a comprehensive Hazardous Area Catalogue to help plant operators select the right hazardous area equipment for their application. The catalogue covers regulatory guidance, area classification, manual and process weighing terminals, high-precision weighing scales, weighing modules and load cells, and truck scales among many more.
