A ground penetrating radar system from Kennards Hire Test & Measure was used by RoadTek to scan the iconic Bribie Island Bridge for locating sub-concrete rebar.

A leading commercial business within the Department of Transport and Main Roads and a major provider of transport infrastructure solutions throughout Queensland, RoadTek hired the new Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan ground penetrating radar from Kennards Hire Test & Measure prior to securing prefabricated steel structures to the bridge.

Originally constructed in 1963, Bribie Island Bridge is the only road link between Bribie Island and the mainland. The purpose of the project was to secure 3m long x 800mm wide prefabricated steel structures to the bridge at various anchor points, creating bays along the outside edge of the bridge to allow cyclists and pedestrians to pass each other safely.

The Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan system incorporates the latest in radar technology and can detect rebar, tendons, metal and plastic conduits, glass-fibre cables, voids, cavities and wood in dry concrete structures up to 300mm in depth. The use of this radar technology allows concrete structural analysis to be conducted, helping avoid costly errors caused by hitting concealed objects when drilling anchor holes or through holes, breaking out openings and diamond coring and sawing work.

Key features of the Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan system include compact all-in-one handheld design; ease of use in the field; real-time view of concrete sub-structures provided for direct on-site evaluation; ability to produce top view scans plus cross-sections; and PC software providing images for data analysis, evaluation and report generation.

The PS 1000 X-Scan radar system is ideally suited to the needs of bridge builders, civil engineering, concrete and precast construction, council, plumbing, electrical and mining industries. The device’s high degree of accuracy was critical for the Bribie Island Bridge project as the specifications were extremely tight.

Working with the site project coordinator, Kennards Hire Test & Measure arranged for an induction of the radar equipment on a Friday and provided several team members with additional instruction on the use of the unit.

Kennards Hire Test & Measure also offers power loggers, cable analysers, hydrostatic test pumps and anchor testers plus an extensive array of handheld devices, with most of the equipment calibrated to NATA specifications.
