During the conversion of a former Centrelink office into a restaurant, a ride-on floor scraper from Kennards Concrete Care proved to be a cost-effective method for removing cementitious grout.

After using a jackhammer to break up glazed ceramic tiles from a 2000 square metre floor area, the Dordel Maintenance team began using a concrete mower to remove the 5mm thick grout residue.

Finding this method slow, they consulted Kennards Concrete Care for alternative ways of completing the job as there are many variables involved in concrete surface preparation, and it is often a case of trying different machines to see which one is best on a particular job.

Kennards Concrete Care recommended the LPG-powered, ride-on scraper which can work indoors where there is good ventilation, fit through standard doorways and deliver high production rates.

The ride-on scraper proved to be cost effective because labour costs are high. They were able to clear about 400 square metres in an eight-hour day with the ride-on scraper, in comparison to the 20 square metres an hour with two or three operators. Peter Orlowski, who operated the machine for Dordel Maintenance on the project at Bankstown in Sydney’s south-west, said that there’s no hard labour involved at all.

According to Angus Kennard, Managing Director of Kennards Concrete Care, their business was about providing solutions to problems, and not just hiring equipment. Many variables and possible limitations need to be considered while working on concrete surfaces. These include the hardness of the concrete, product to be removed, surface finish required, indoor and outdoor locations, wet and dry environment, need for dust control and power source.

Kennards Concrete Care offer a free on-site advice service to help customers work out which way they want to go. Kennards Concrete Care have outlets in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
