Kennards Hire Test & Measure has introduced a new range of vacuum test kits to their equipment hire portfolio. The new vacuum test kit addresses the problematic process of testing sewer pipes using conventional methods, which always present accuracy, time and price concerns.

Offering a highly efficient, accurate and cost-effective solution for testing new, existing and rehabilitated manholes and sewers, the new vacuum test kit now available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure has been designed to test the integrity of manholes and their resistance to water infiltration or exfiltration.

Leo De Sousa, Product Specialist at Kennards Hire Test & Measure East Brisbane explains that the test is performed by creating a vacuum in the manhole, with the operator monitoring a gauge for vacuum loss and identifying problems within minutes. The head assemblies are made of lightweight aluminium.

Sewer pipes were previously tested with water using infiltration or exfiltration methods. Groundwater entering the pipe was monitored through the use of a weir, while the exfiltration test involved introducing water into the pipeline and monitoring the level, usually over 24 hours.

However, both infiltration and exfiltration methods can be problematic. In infiltration tests, a faulty section of pipe could pass due to no groundwater being present; it’s also difficult to use metering equipment to measure water flow. In exfiltration tests problems can occur if groundwater is present; water will not escape from the pipe, leading to inaccurate results. Additionally, these methods of testing are expensive and time consuming. Even if a leak is identified, there’s no method to determine its exact location.

According to Leo, the vacuum test kit from Kennards Hire Test & Measure enables manholes to be tested for identifying a leak immediately before or after ring installation and backfilling. There is no need to conduct water tests. The vacuum pump draws 254mm hg in approximately two minutes for a 4.5m deep manhole at a rate of 425 lpm. An oil-free graphite vane pump eliminates the need for a cumbersome lubrication system.

The vacuum test kit from Kennards Hire Test & Measure is ideal for construction, civil engineering, remedial works, plumbing contractors, council, utilities and waste management companies.
