An Electrodrive Tug was hired from Kennards Lift & Shift for moving heavy waste bins at a Melbourne hospital. Tim Walsh, the Occupational Health and Safety Officer, St Vincents & Mercy Private Hospital, hired the Tug for use at Vimy House Private Hospital, Kew.

St Vincents & Mercy Private Hospital, a not-for profit Catholic facility, have upgraded the historic Kew site with four new operating theatres and updated equipment and technology also. During building work, the eight waste bins had to be relocated to an area which was inaccessible to the collection truck. This meant that maintenance staff had to move the bins about 20m on three days each week, when they were emptied.

According to Tim, the bins were heavy and so they were a bit concerned about injuries occurring. Moving one of them by hand puts excessive strain on the body, particularly the back, knees and shoulders. The Tug was hired as it was needed for only a limited time while the building work was going on.

Kennards Lift & Shift have an exclusive agreement with Electrodrive to hire pedestrian-operated, battery-electric units, which can move loads of up to 2 tonne. Four different types of hitching attachments are available depending on what is being towed. Kennards Lift & Shift have hire centres in Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
