What's the different between thermal direct and thermal transfer labels?
Thermal Direct Labels use a chemically treated heat sensitive paper that blackens when it passes under a thermal print head. "Thermal Direct" labels are best suited to short term applications or products with a short shelf life and not in direct sunlight. Most logistical labels including carton and pallet labels utilize direct thermal technology. "Thermal Transfer" labels use a heated ribbon to transfer the images and text to the label. Thermal transfer suits a much broader range of applications and label materials including paper, polyester, and polypropylene materials. The specific label material and ribbon must be carefully matched to ensure print performance and durability.
