The ACT Emergency Services is using the reliable Gorman-Rupp T-Series pump to speed up the filling process for their firefighting aircraft at their Canberra Airport facility.

Hydro Innovations NSW regional manager Phil Rothheudt recently had the privilege of watching the team from ACT Emergency Services operate a Gorman-Rupp T-Series pump to fill their firefighting planes.

The planes that were being filled were SEAT aircraft (Single Engine Attack Tanker) with each taking about 3500 litres, which the Gorman-Rupp pump was able to complete in less than 2½ minutes – an excellent improvement in performance over the old pump, which took 3½ minutes. With the Gorman-Rupp T-Series delivering a 35% reduction in filling time, ACT Emergency Services was able to significantly reduce their turnaround time.

The Gorman-Rupp T-Series pump was again used to fill up one of the ‘Bomber’ aircrafts (LAT - Large Air Tanker), which was an RFS 737 plane with a capacity of 16,000 litres. The aircraft was filled in just 14½ minutes, down from 23 minutes with the previous pump, thereby achieving a 37% improvement.

Three different liquids are used to fill an aircraft: Water, straight from the hydrant at the air base using the Gorman-Rupp T-Series pump; Retardant (phosphate) premixed on the ground and then pumped into the aircraft; and, Foam (Blaze Tamer 380), which is in a concentrated form, and then ‘sucked in’ and mixed with the water via a venturi on the suction hose of the pump.
