New report identifies global competitiveness by design

A report launched this week identifies “design-led innovation” as something Australian manufacturers should embrace in order to assist global competitiveness.

Design for manufacturing competitiveness was launched by industry minister Ian Macfarlane, who said it offered advice on how to transition to high value-added products that met constantly changing market demands.

“High-performing, globally competitive Australian manufacturing firms that apply design principles to all aspects of their work have common attributes: they listen to customers, suppliers and researchers, and then turn their ideas into products and services their customers want,” said Macfarlane.

He cited RODE Microphones, plumbing and safety solutions manufacturer Enware and access systems company Centor as examples of companies that competed on value rather than cost.

The report was developed by University of technology Sydney Professor Sam Bucolo and CSIRO Future Manufacturing Flagship’s Peter King, and studies 14 successful Australian companies.

Out of the case studies, five principles related to a “design-led innovation” framework work identified. These were named as Clarity of Purpose, Become Your Market, Be the Disruptor, Integrated Business Model, and Own the Change Experience.

“A fundamental shift is needed for the manufacturing sector to remain competitive and relevant,” said Professor Bucolo, who leads UTS’s Design and Innovation Research Centre, in a statement.

“But with a new approach towards innovation, and by carving out a place in the global supply chain, Australia’s manufacturers can transform their future.”
