Premier Farnell is a leading high service, multi-channel distributor of electronic and industrial products as well as specialist services throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific.
The company is pleased to announce that one of their three sponsored elite athletes with disabilities, Nurulasyiqah Mohammad Taha clinched the bronze medal at the 2010 Boccia World Championships in Lisbon, Portugal bringing her a step closer to representing Singapore in the 2012 London Paralympics Games.
Expressing her delight to be given the privilege of representing Singapore and competing for the country on an international platform, the 24-year-old athlete who has muscular atrophy said, “Competing for the first time with athletes from beyond the Asia-Pacific region has shown me the areas I need improvement on.”
Nurulasyiqah took the silver medal for last year’s 3rd Asia & South Pacific Boccia Championship in Hong Kong.
Equally delighted with her progress is Salman Syed, Regional Head, Asia Pacific, Premier Farnell.
He said, “Nurulasyiqah’s dedication and determination has enabled her to overcome many personal challenges and attain excellence at her chosen sport. Premier Farnell is committed to provide support towards helping her achieve her goal of representing Singapore in the London 2012 Paralympics Games. Her exposure to different methods of play from athletes all over the world would spur her to develop new ideas to improve her craft.”
“Nurulasyiqah’s latest victory in Portugal embodies the high performance an athlete with disabilities can achieve and her determination is something that we at Premier Farnell value,” added Syed.
Nurulasyiqah uses technology to gain an edge over her opponents and applies it to her own assistive devices to achieve better results.
Throughout the next two years, Premier Farnell will continue working with Nurulasyiqah to understand the role that technology plays in Boccia, and endeavour to move beyond offering monetary support toward her Paralympics Games goal.
The company is assisting her in sourcing for suitable sports equipment by engaging electronic design engineers via a dedicated Sport Technology section on element14, a technology resource and popular online community portal owned by Premier Farnell.
element14 is an exclusive e-community specially built for these engineers to share information, collaborate and seek support.
Said Syed about element14, “This virtual arena is a technical playground where our engineering community will have a chance to interact directly with Nurulasyiqah and even design sports equipment for her use. Nurulasyiqah has made her needs known as a guest blogger on element14 and I am sure someone will ably take up the challenge in designing a suitable Boccia device for her.”
Premier Farnell supports local communities and assists people with disabilities live full and active lives.
Partnering the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), the company is proud to co-host this year’s National Swimming Championships.
