Siemens and Edge PLM to launch Solid Edge 8

Supplier News

Edge PLM Software announces the latest release of Siemens’ Solid Edge software featuring new functionality designed to help users increase design speed and improve their ability to leverage synchronous technology, while providing greater flexibility in choice of platform and purchasing options.

In conjunction with the release of Solid Edge ST8, Edge’s product lifecycle management (PLM) business has also launched a new Solid Edge App Marketplace mobile app that will provide add-on solutions to extend the capabilities of Solid Edge, helping customers further enhance product development productivity and improve performance through an accelerated design process. The Solid Edge App Marketplace also offers a choice of purchasing options, including a monthly subscription model, designed to meet varying business requirements and provide customers financial flexibility.

The full version of Solid Edge ST8 can now be installed on tablets running Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 operating system, giving users more freedom to design anytime, anywhere.

Ricardo Espinosa, R&D engineering manager, Kimball International expressed his satisfaction with the enhancements made to the synchronous technology interface in Solid Edge ST8. He explained that the improvements will enable a rapid learning curve, helping them train interns and temporary workers, and get them up to speed quickly.

Improvements to synchronous design intent management, complex sketching and 3D feature recognition enable users to focus on designs, rather than the design tools, resulting in an accelerated modelling process. Flexible modelling incorporating synchronous technology frees the user to intuitively produce realistic, accurate designs faster, reducing time-to-market. Synchronous technology combines the speed and flexibility of direct modelling with the precise control of dimension-driven design.

Key benefits of Solid Edge ST8 software also include simplification of large and complex assembly capabilities combined with the ability to accurately simulate and predict kinematic conditions, greatly accelerating the assembly design process and significantly reducing the need for physical prototypes; extended access to in-product learning tools, online community and the new Solid Edge App Marketplace; full support of Windows 8.1 multi-touch interface enabling users to design more intuitively; and full access to design processes on mobile platforms providing location flexibility, further enabling innovation and collaboration.

Chad Jackson, Research Analyst, Lifecycle Insights comments that Solid Edge ST8 users are realising real benefits in terms of collaborating with suppliers and addressing customer needs on the go.

John Miller, Senior Vice President, Mainstream Engineering Software, Siemens PLM Software observes that Solid Edge ST8 significantly enhances accessibility and ease of use. He adds that the software offers users the flexibility to decide how they deploy Solid Edge, be it as a floating or node locked license, a desktop workstation or a fully mobile platform. As a result, Solid Edge customers are able to design better and realise innovation.

Solid Edge ST8 is scheduled to ship to customers in July.
