A leading Australian fashion retailer, The Just Group has won the Information Management Award in the recent Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards for its implementation of a Dematic retail stocktaking system called RapidStocktake.

Presented by the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia in Perth recently, the award recognises the retailer’s innovative application of Bluetooth technology to the stocktaking process, which has delivered a host of efficiency benefits and cost savings for the group.

The Just Group includes well-known high street outlets such as Just Jeans, Portmans, Peter Alexander and Jay Jays.

The Group operates a large network of around a thousand stores in Australia and New Zealand with the twice-yearly stocktake involving a labour-intensive and costly operation that also requires the stores to remain closed on the day of stocktaking until the process is completed.

Dematic worked with Smart Scanner supplier Motorola and retail software specialist Bizcom to create a stocktaking solution using Bluetooth to facilitate wireless data transfer within the stores. In addition to being an effective wireless data transfer system, Bluetooth technology is also very secure making it ideal for use in stores.

The Dematic retail stocktaking system has helped The Just Group reduce the time required to complete a typical stocktake from around three to four hours to less than two hours, with average labour savings of around four man hours per store. With two stocktakes across a thousand stores each year, this will deliver significant cost savings for the group.

With the new stocktaking process typically requiring an hour less to complete, the group has also been able to open stores on the day of stocktake by 9.30am instead of around 10:30am in the past, limiting the impact of stocktaking on customers while also generating significant additional sales during the extra trading hours across the network of stores.

Another Dematic customer, Nestlé Australia was the event’s standout performer, winning in the three award categories of Manufacturing Logistics, Storage and Handling of Materials, and Supply Chain Management.

Nestle won the awards for robotic layer picking systems at its Arndell Park national distribution centre (DC) in Sydney’s western suburbs.
