Reputed watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen relies on measuring technology from Carl Zeiss for the quality assurance of their high-end Swiss watches.

Driven by a desire to create innovative watches that blend technology and engineering in an exclusive design, the watchmakers even work on a single masterpiece for several weeks. For a watch to show the exact time all the time, each component, however tiny, must be perfectly matched to one another with some of the measurements having tolerances of just 2 micrometres.

Previously relying on manual measurements in quality management, IWC introduced measurement technology from Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology for more precise results.

Explaining the partnership with Carl Zeiss, Thomas Bregel, Associate Director of Quality at IWC says that IWC Schaffhausen is a growing international company focussed on precision, technology, perfection and uniqueness in its products. They decided to rely on a partner in quality assurance that also lived these values.

Carl Zeiss’ solution for IWC comprised of coordinate measuring machines and central data management. Multiple coordinate measuring machines, one software to program measuring jobs and a centralised data management system together form the backbone of the quality inspection system at IWC.

Four O-INSPECT multisensor measuring machines in the measuring labs are used to inspect the position and form features of the watch parts. Two DuraMax coordinate measuring machines featuring a small footprint and insensitive to temperature fluctuations are used directly on the shopfloor.

IWC has been able to benefit from precise measuring results delivered by Carl Zeiss’ solution. A coordinate measuring machine completes complex 3D measurements in just a few minutes. Networking the machines via the web-based PiWeb quality documentation system enables IWC employees to flexibly measure every part on every machine with PiWeb merging all results in a central data pool.

Bregel adds that the new coordinate measuring machines are helping IWC maximise measuring accuracy and increase efficiency in quality assurance.
