Australian Institute of Packaging VIC Technical Dinner

Supplier News

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is hosting a technical dinner to discuss the draft document being assembled by the National Packaging Covenant in order to represent a further evolution in the management of used packaging in Australia.

Details of the technical dinner are as follows:

  • Date: Wednesday the 18th of November
  • Venue: Box Hill Golf Club, 202 Station Street, Box Hill
  • Time: 6.00 pm for a 6.30 pm start- The evening concludes at approx 9.30 pm
  • Tickets are available to members and non-members\

The key element that the AIP will provide for the technical dinner is the issue of  'Timeliness'. Members will have the opportunity to hear from Gavin Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Packaging Council of Australia and Edward Cordner, Chief Executive Offi cer, National Packaging Covenant.
Gavin and Edward are two of the key personnel on the board who have made the presentation to the Ministers and they will be able to evaluate the minister’s decision only days after it has been released for our Members. The meeting will be in two parts. Key note presentations followed by an open forum led by Robin Tuckerman who is an industry leader in the field of NPC applications.

This will be the third Covenant of its type, bringing a greater awareness that for packaging to be sustainable, full lifecycle considerations need to be taken into account, focusing on recycling of used packaging as possibly counter-productive. Instead,  the new Covenant draft will focus more on design for sustainability, incorporating the concepts of 'cradle-to-cradle' and life cycle analysis – to ensure sustainable practices are implemented by the supply chain. It recognises that packaging policy needs to also focus on recovery strategies for energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental priorities.
