New gas analyser to monitor hydrogen cooled generators

AMS Instrumentation and Calibration announces a new range of gas analysers from Michell Instruments designed with three phase profiles to cover complete gas analysis requirements in hydrogen cooled generators. Michell has added the new XTC601 dedicated to monitoring hydrogen-cooled electricity generators to its current range of moisture and oxygen analysers.

Generators use hydrogen as an effective coolant as it has the highest thermal conductivity of all gases, allowing it to quickly draw heat away from the stator. Hydrogen also has low density, which reduces drag on the brushes to make the generator work more efficiently.

However, for the cooling to be effective and safe, high purity hydrogen is required. Since it’s not possible to hermetically seal the generator set casings, there is always the potential for moisture ingress from the surrounding air. Excessive moisture in the system not only reduces efficiency, but also introduces the risk of arcing while oxygen in excess could cause an explosion.

Operators not only monitor the purity of hydrogen but also frequently purge the system with CO2 to remove all the hydrogen safely, before carrying out the scheduled maintenance.

The XTC601 gas analysers for hydrogen cooled generators have three phase profiles to cover all stages of the process:

Normal operation

H2 purity is monitored through continuous, online measurements of the atmosphere within the generator.

Purging H2 with CO2

The system is purged with CO2 to ensure all the H2 has been removed before undertaking routine maintenance for safety and to avoid risk of explosions.

Purging CO2 with air

This phase ensures that the atmosphere is safe for engineers to work.

Using a single analyser to monitor each of the phases reduces installation costs and capital expenditure for the company. Similar to all of Michell’s thermal conductivity analysers, the non-depleting sensor is also highly cost-effective over its lifetime as there are no consumable parts to replace.
