While the function of a material handling storage system designed to store materials on pallets may be similar among warehouse and logistics operators, managers are often caught up choosing a rack that is unsuitable for their warehouse.

There are many varieties of pallet racking and although all types do allow for the storage and palletised materials to be organised in horizontal rows with multiple levels, managers may either underestimate or overestimate the specifications of their racks and shelves.

Essentially the pallet racking used within storage and warehouse spaces can be distilled down to two types of systems: selective and structural.

Structural pallet racking can be designed into the structure of the building itself, so that the upright columns are simultaneously used to support the roof of the storage facility, in which case the structural pallet rack uprights replace the storage building’s vertical support I-beams. This system is a rack supported building.

Selective pallet rack systems provide easy accessibility to all products at all times –important if the inventory is rapidly depleted and restocked in the quick turnover. A selective pallet rack system is commonly used in a “big-box” distribution application, as well as in retail store inventory rooms, cold storage applications, wholesale stores and lots more.

One of the many ways in which warehouse managers and racking providers attempt to make their racking stands unique is to utilise used pallet racking –second hand racking that is able to stand up to any major defects that might otherwise weaken it.

Eugene Devine, Sales Director of AGAME says the business supplies to a range of other racking and shelving companies including Dexxion, Colby, Schaefer, Macrack and APC. Depending on what the customer needs, taking into consideration both the size of the physical and logistical requirements, AGAME can have a warehouse set up anywhere between 3-5 days.

“Whenever we come into possession of any used racking, we evaluate it and test it to be sure that it will stand up to their needs…We’re always conscious of quality when it comes to second hand racks and standards like AS4084 help us keep an edge over the manufacturers that import their products,” Devine said.
