ADM Instrument Engineering announces a new range of portal monitors from Thermo Scientific designed specifically for radiation detection in sources including cars, trucks, freight and even people passing through them.

Radiation portal monitors have been deployed at all U.S. airports since 2009 as a security measure against terrorist attacks. Even freight companies such as FedEx and UPS have fixed portal monitors installed in all of their facilities around the world that ship goods to the U.S.A.

Security reasons aside, radiation portal monitors are also used in other applications right across Australia, particularly in the scrap metal recycling industry.

Though the chances of a radiation source entering a recycling plant is highly unlikely, the OH&S risks of failing to detect it are extremely high. For instance, the 2007 Goiânia accident resulted in the deaths of four Brazilians with another 249 found to have significant levels of radioactive material in or on their bodies.

Older radiation detection systems had an excess of ‘nuisance alarms’, which were constantly triggered on detection of low-level radiation produced by items such as kitty litter, bananas or even people who had undergone radiation treatment in hospital; these alarms were at risk of being ignored by operators. Older systems also sometimes failed to detect a radioactive source, especially when surrounded by metal.

By eliminating these problems, Thermo Scientific’s new radiation detection technology is far more effective than previous systems.

Key features and benefits of the new ASM3000SE and ASM-IV portal monitors include ability to ignore the effects of background radiation, with greater effectiveness in detecting anomalies; spectrographic capabilities allowing the radiation source to be identified quickly; and portal panels optimised for sensitivity, delivering superior performance when detecting small sources even when surrounded by metal scrap.

There are several applications where the possible risk of radiation exposure warrants the effective use of radiation portal monitors.
