In the little over an hour that it takes for the 8.23 am Route 75 tram to travel from Vermont South to Southern Cross Station, another Victorian worker will have been injured seriously enough to make a workers compensation claim.
Fortunately, in the same time it takes for the tram to travel from Vermont, through Burwood, Camberwell, Burnley and Richmond to the city, WorkSafe Victoria will have visited six Victoria workplaces helping to ensure they are safer.
As part of a new campaign to create awareness about WorkSafe inspectors and their role in safety, a tram covered with WorkSafe logos and slogans has had its maiden journey through Melbourne.
The yellow tram, with the WorkSafe logo and the message ‘WorkSafe Inspectors stopping at a workplace every 12 minutes’, will be trundling along Routes 70 and 75 for the next three months.
WorkSafe Victoria’s Executive Director, John Merritt, said the tram was a great way to get the message out to Melburnians about how inspectors helped make workplaces safer.
“It really compliments what we have been doing in the electronic and print media in reminding Victorian employers that our inspectors make more than 40,000 visits to workplaces each year.”
“Those inspectors have a crucial role to play in reducing the number of injuries that occur” John Merritt said.
Over the past five years more than 23,000 claims have been made by workers in the Local Government Areas that Route 75 passes through (Yarra, Boroondara, Melbourne and Whitehorse).
The cost of treatment and rehabilitation of those workers exceeds $363-million.
These claims are based on people with medical expenses exceeding $500 and/or 10 days off work.
