Following the transfer of the regulatory responsibility for workplace health and safety in Victoria’s minerals sector to WorkSafe Victoria on 1 January, industry stakeholders met for a tripartite safety seminar in Melbourne this week.
The one-day workshop was structured around the need for relevant safe systems of work with the underlying theme being the need for a free flow of communication.
Consultation and communication are key themes of Victoria’s workplace safety legislation.
Operators from Victoria’s hard rock mines, mineral sands and coal industries were joined by mine managers, health and safety representatives and union officials for the workshop that looked at the following:
- Lessons from past incidents
- Safety improvements through risk analysis and systems and
- The need for active participation in workplace health and safety
Industry groups will be involved in a range of workshops and other activities during Work Safe Week in October.
