IC sockets were normally mounted on a PCB but upgrade and replacements were not easy to make. PLCC socket provides an alternative to IC sockets.
PLCC sockets, available from Westek Electronics , are soldered to the plated-through holes or to the SMT layout on a PCB, in order to mount the carrier on the board. This makes the replacement and upgrade of memory chips in microcontrollers easy as no soldering is needed.
Würth Elektronik provide PLCC sockets through hole and SMT types in different pin numbers such as 20, 28, 32, 44, 52, 68 and 84.
