Transient protection systems manufactured by Leutron GmbH and available from Westek Electronics are designed to protect PV panels from lightning strikes.
A major manufacturer of transient protection systems, Leutron has introduced protection systems for PV panels that are likely to be subject to strong induced voltages by nearby lightning strikes.
Direct strike protection requires lightning arrester technology, but even with this form of protection, high voltages will be induced inductively and capacitively in nearby conductors and modules.
The exposed PV panels therefore require transient protection, which is provided by the new Leutron systems. In addition to the protection of the inverter at the AC output side, DC protection for the PV panels is essential.
The Leutron EnerPro 502 series of transient protection systems is available in three basic models catering for panel voltages of 500, 800 and 1000 volts respectively.
The transient protection systems can handle discharge current to 20 kA (40 kA max.) and voltages to 2.5, 2.5 and 4.2 kV respectively. The Leutron EnerPro series is protected to IP20 standards and is suitable for DIN-rail mounting.
