Identification of hazardous chemical waste by Warsash Scientific's FirstDefender

In order to identify potentially hazardous chemicals accurately and immediately, Warsash Scientific  presents Ahura Scientific’s FirstDefender. FirstDefender is an all-optical Raman spectroscopy system, both light-weight and rugged, for immediate identification of unknown solids and liquids.

Proper disposal of chemical waste is a growing concern for communities around the globe. Illegally dumped drums can present a hazard to residents as well as the environment.

Firstly, responders and remediation firms need to ascertain the contents of illegally dumped drums or unlabelled spilled material. Hazardous waste analysis not only requires collecting solid or liquid waste samples from various containment vessels but also involves an onsite preliminary assessment. Further testing offsite or in a nearby laboratory adds a tremendous amount of time– and expense– to the identification and clean up process.

Individual layers of stratified waste in composite liquid waste samplers (COLIWASA) can be rapidly identified with FirstDefender. It allows responders to instantly identify potentially hazardous chemicals directly in the field without sample preparation and without the need for a PhD in Chemistry. This greatly optimises response time and enables rapid triage and remediation of hazardous waste incidents.
