Veolia develops MPPE water treatment technology for Ichthys LNG project

Supplier News

VWS MPP Systems has been contracted by leading shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to supply a Macro Porous Polymer Extraction water purification (MPPE) unit for the Ichthys LNG Project’s Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. VWS MPP Systems is a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies .

Located in the Browse Basin off the north-west coast of Western Australia, Ichthys Field is the largest discovery of hydrocarbon liquids in Australia in 40 years and will place Australia in the top two LNG exporting countries by 2020.

The INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project will involve offshore preliminary processing of gas from the Ichthys Field to remove water and extract condensate before being transported to onshore LNG processing facilities in Darwin via an 889km pipeline. Most condensate will be sent to an in-field FPSO from which it will be shipped to market. The Ichthys LNG Project is expected to produce 8.4 million tons of LNG and 1.6 million tons of LPG per annum, along with approximately 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

During the production of gas and condensate, formation and dehydration water is co-produced containing dissolved and dispersed aromatics, aliphatics and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The MPPE technology is being employed to remove all toxic compounds securely in a single process to comply with the strictest requirements. The fully automated MPPE water treatment unit is supplied in a skid mounted module.
