Vector Lifting installed a retractable roof at the prestigious Perth Arena, which recently hosted the inaugural Hyundai Hopman Cup.
Being an open air event to replicate conditions for the Australian Open, all matches were played under the retractable roof. The roof was opened and adjusted throughout the entire tournament, even during match play over both players and spectators.
The customised engineering solution delivered by Vector Lifting included the design, manufacture and installation of the travelling equipment for the two separate roof panels. Each roof panel of the retractable roof is controlled independently to provide shade for spectators, protect the bowl area from inclement weather and track the sun to prevent shadows being cast on the court.
The moving roof panels are controlled in an Event Control Room with operators inputting the desired percentage open or closed position on a touch screen for the roof panels to automatically start, track along the building’s megatruss and stop in the set position. All operations, other than pressing the ‘open’ or ‘closed’ buttons are automatically monitored and controlled by the retractable roof’s computer management system.
