Visy Industrial Packaging (Visy) has shown that sustainability and industrial packaging can go hand in hand after independently reviewed figures last month revealed significant reductions in harmful emissions at Visy’s steel plants.
A study has shown that Visy’s steel sites have reduced its emissions from solvents (Volatile organic compounds) which are harmful to humans and plants by 85% per pail and 93% per can.
Greenhouse gas emissions have also been reduced by 14% per pail and 17% per drum produced.
The emission amounts, which were reviewed by Ernst & Young*, were based on production and consumption data from Visy’s Victorian, New South Wales and Queensland steel sites and have followed four years of strategic plant upgrades by the company.
Raphael Geminder, Chairman of Visy Industrial Packaging , says the reductions are the result of strategic upgrades to bring Visy’s manufacturing practises in line with its vision ‘To help people make sustainable choices’.
“Some of the greatest improvements have come from the new flagship steel site at Truganina in Melbourne’s western suburbs”, he says, “which is the most significant investment in the Australian steel packaging market in the past two decades”.
Equipped with state of the art manufacturing equipment and processes, Geminder describes the improvements as world’s best practise, including a new drum line which uses waste solvents as a supplementary fuel source plus equipment that destructs almost all harmful emissions all together.
While other new and improved sites have contributed towards the emissions savings, Geminder says Visy’s Environmental Management Systems, which it implements across the board at all plants, ensure targets are set each year to guarantee ongoing improvements in eco-efficiency.
Geminder says Visy can use the data to calculate emissions savings for its customers that purchase drums, pails and cans. He encourages these customers to find out exactly what difference doing business with Visy means for the environment.
“This is valuable information that can also be used to quantify their company’s own environmental activity”. “Sustainability”, he says, “is not just a word to Visy, it’s a way of doing business and this underpins everything we do right down to supporting our customers”.
Visy’s Sustainability Services division is a unique service dedicated to finding and implementing sustainable solutions for both Visy and its customers so that all Visy products are 100% recyclable by 2008.
The division also provides bulk reconditioning services for steel and plastic drums and intermediate bulk containers plus a collection and recycling service for ‘hard to recycle’ products that cannot be collected via traditional recycling networks.
