One of the biggest challenges while designing a display panel or display sign is power management. Though each LED needs only a small amount of power in steady or peak current state, the number of LEDs in even a small display panel board is quite large, increasing the overall power consumption substantially.
For example, a 2-line 20-character tri-colour sign has 1920 red and 1920 green LEDs, theoretically drawing a steady state current of 3840 x 10 mA or 38 amps, even though not all LEDs will be on at the same time. However, one can expect a current consumption of 25 amps.
Most LED marquees in the market have inefficient power supplies and would use approximately 200 watts, resulting in a significant increase in internal temperature that requires them to incorporate thermal overloads or even fans to keep the marquee cool.
Some of the marquees for instance, are rated at 55ºC but have an automatic dimdown at 55ºC and an automatic shutdown at 70ºC.
