Ultraspin Oily Water Separation System Installed at Mining Facility

Ultraspin Technology  supplied an oily water separation system to Rio Tinto Iron Ore as a central oily water treatment facility to remove oil and grease from a centralised collection pit.  

Ultraspin oil water separators are skid-mounted oily water treatment systems, comprising of an Ultraspin OS35 oily water separation unit with an air-operated diaphragm pump and strainer assembly.  

Ultraspin OS35 oily water separation system is employed to separate oil and grease from a centralised collection pit to remove dissolved hydrocarbons.  

The Ultraspin oily water separation system included: 

  • OS35 oily water treatment system
  • S1 skimmer, level switch and recycle function
  • 1,100L oil collection/ decant tank
  • Water transfer pump
  • Air compressor

Fluid properties of the process effluent water that influence Ultraspin separator’s performance: 

  • Oil water density difference
  • Oil droplet size
  • Water temperature
  • Water viscosity

Oily water effluent is drawn through a single floating skimmer. Oil skimmers used in the Ultraspin system are automatic self-adjusting and free-floating models.  

The oily water flows from the skimmer to a debris strainer on the separator skid that removes large debris and particles to protect equipment. Cleaning of the strainer is required when the delta pressure is greater than 50 kPa. 

The fluid is pumped through the Ultraspin separator with pressure provided by the Ultraspin feed pump. A pressure switch is included to shutdown the Ultraspin feed pump if it detects abnormal pressure.  

The feed pump pressure creates a strong vortex that produces a centrifugal force to separate the oil droplets from the water. The oily wet solids will also be affected by the vortex.  

The separated oil and smaller oily wet solids will go out with the reject stream while the treated clean water is sent to the evaporation pond.  

The separated oil with some water is sent to the 1100L oil collection tank for further processing. The concentrated oil rises to the top of the tank and is drawn from the liquid surface for collection in the dry oil collection bulky cube.  

The remaining water is decanted from the bottom of the collection tank and returned to the start for reprocessing.
