Mining company, BHP Billiton , recently commissioned a heavy vehicle wash water reclaim system from Ultraspin Technology.
At the BHP Billiton mining site, water contaminated during vehicle washing is collected in the washdown pits. When the level switch in the pit triggers, the Ultraspin vehicle wash water reclaim system draws from the pit through a floating skimmer and a subsurface feed. The wash water is pumped via a low shear centrifugal pump at a system flow rate of 90 m3/h. It passes
through a back up strainer, which screens for debris to 3mm.
The vehicle wash water then enters the hydrocarbon separation vessel, where the light phase hydrocarbons are removed. The removed hydrocarbon rich stream is sent to a 10kL decant tank. Here the hydrocarbon phase is trapped by means of a decant pipe, which allows the contaminated water component to precipitate off to the pit for re-treatment. The hydrocarbon phase is trapped in the 10kL tank for pump out.
Once treated in this vehicle wash water reclaim system, the water then passes to the solids removal vessel, where solids-liquid hydrocyclones treat the water for solid particles. The solid rich stream is passed backed to the pit for removal during pit remediation.
The treated water, now treated for light and heavy phase contaminants, is sent to the 5 kL aeration tank in the vehicle wash water reclaim system, where air is introduced to remove any dissolved phase hydrocarbons and neutrally buoyant material that has passed through the first two treatment stages. The foam from this stage is sent back to the first collection pit, to be trapped with other gross contaminants.
The treated water, now ready for use as reclaim water, is sent to the 100 kL reclaim tank for storage. The reuse pumps are connected to this tank, to supply the water cannons with the
desired flow. During periods of peak demand or maintenance, the reclaim tank will be topped up with fresh water via a fresh water make up valve.
