Batch Sample Analysis

Background - The measurement of magnetic susceptibility is widely used in the processing of titanium minerals. The expected mineral recoveries are assessed by performing laboratory magnetic separations of representative samples to determine the distribution of magnetic components. Traditionally this has been a slow, labour intensive process performed on relatively small samples.

Magnasat now can rapidly determine the mass distribution of the magnetic properties of mineral samples. The system includes magnetic susceptibility technology together with a sophisticated mathematical algorithm developed to determine the percentage of the feed material at each level of magnetic susceptibility.

Benefits - The results are proven to be identical to those determined using a laboratory magnetic separation with the added benefit that
they are obtained in a fraction of the time compared to use of a Permroll technique.
The accuracy of the system has been proven both by simulation and by testing of plant samples, and by comparing the results using Magnasat with those of measurements made using a magnetic separator.

Results - Tests have been carried out to compare the results from the new technique with those obtained from conventional Permroll tests. Figure 2 compares the results of passing an ilmenite feed sample through the Magnasat (a 2 minute operation) with results of a Permroll separation of the same sample at increasing belt speeds (a 40 minute operation). Figure 2 results are expressed as the cumulative % passing at levels of magnetic susceptibility.

RC Chip Analysis

MAGNASAT Bulk Sample is an easy to use, compact, fully integrated system designed for use in the field.  The sample is weighed, placed in a sample bucket and then inserted into the analysis chamber.  The system computer control automatically carries out analysis.  Indicator lights confirm system status.  Results are stored in Excel compatible format able to be output for display in graphical or tabular configuration.
 
To determine magnetic susceptibility MAGNASAT measures the changes to an alternating current magnetic field caused by a material.

Changes in the magnetic field are caused by a complex mix of eddy currents and the action of magnetic domains.

The magnitude of these changes depend on the magnetic and electrical properties, sample geometry and quantity of the material presented for measurement.

MAGNASAT technology is based on tried and tested physical principle:
A magnet moving through a coil generates an electrical current, conversely an electrical current passed through a coil produces a magnetic field. This provides an absolute measurement of
magnetic susceptibility.
