Sustainable Mining Conference to address practices within the mining industry

Supplier News

The Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (The AusIMM) will be addressing the challenge of sustainability in the mining industry at the Sustainable Mining Conference in Kalgoorlie from the 17th to the 19th of August.

The conference, to be held at the WMC Conference Centre, will draw on the knowledge of leading experts and innovators within the mining industry, as well as focusing on case studies of what can and has been achieved elsewhere.

Conference sessions will address topics such as:

  • increasing the energy efficiency of mining and processing operations
  • reduction, reuse and remediation
  • sustainable water use; and
  • communities and local adaptation.

The conference theme is Sustainable Mining – A Business Case. Conference chair Morrie Goodz says the conference will have a strong, local hands-on approach.

“Kalgoorlie has a history of over a century of mining activity, and continually improving and adapting both technology and practice in order to deliver consistently improved sustainability outcomes,” Morrie says.

Many of the case studies discussed at the conference will be of mines operating in the Kalgoorlie goldfields, with open pit and underground mine tours planned as well.

“We are also fortunate to have presenters from overseas locations such as Papua New
Guinea and Indonesia,” Morrie adds.

The conference will include a strong technology and innovation focus with Dr Peter Lilly, Director of CSIRO Minerals Down Under Flagship providing the opening keynote.

The conference will also address issues of regulation, royalties and native title within the mining industry, with experts in these fields giving presentations.

Mr Goodz says that as regulations and social expectations increase, the mining industry needs to look towards an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to problems as they arise.

“Many companies are already taking this approach, and others are looking for innovative practices and technologies that will allow them to do so,” he says.

The event has attracted strong sponsorship from local operators and global companies, with GHD and Gold Fields Australia Pty Limited principal sponsors of the Conference, and Goodz GMC and KCGM major sponsors of the Conference
