In ancient times wax seals were used to signify that a sealed document had not been opened from the time it was written until it reached its desired destination.

Roman signet rings for example, were unique to the person who owned them, and the ring was pressed into a hot wax seal forming a signature which could not be easily duplicated by somebody attempting to re-seal the document.

Today documents can be protected by using Tamper Evident security labels or tapes that are unique to the sender and will reveal any attempt to open or re-seal the document.
