EPSON, represented by TE Australia , has released the S1C88650, an 8-bit microcomputer equipped with high-capacity ROM and an LCD driver that enables support for Chinese/Asian character fonts.
The S1C88650 features low-current consumption, making it suitable for mobile devices. It is useful in such products as mobile audio equipment, cordless phones, remote control panels for home electronics, and other small, battery-operated mobile devices equipped with a Chinese character LCD display.
In Japan, the market for mobile audio gear and other devices capable of displaying Asian characters is growing.
In China, too, where most mobile audio devices display only Roman letters, devices with Chinese character display capability have begun to appear and are gaining in popularity.
Targeting the Chinese market, EPSON developed the S1C88650 based on a microcomputer (the S1C88649) already in use in Japan in mobile audio devices with Chinese character display capability.
The new microcomputer has expanded ROM, with a capacity of 48KB and 896 KB ROM for data and program. It also has an LCD driver which enable it to store the huge font sets necessary for displaying Chinese characters.
