SYMBOL Technologies has announced the general availability of the PDT 8000, a high-performance rugged handheld computer.

Symbol's PDT 8000 is part of a broad and line of Windows-powered, Pocket PC-based mobile computing products with integrated barcode scanning and wireless local area network (WLAN), and wireless wide area network (WWAN) capabilities.

The PDT 8000 is a compact, ergonomic Pocket PC mobile computing device with integrated wireless communications and barcode data capture.

Created to meet the needs of mobile workers, the PDT 8000 is rugged enough for use anywhere along the supply chain, and provides the speed, power and functionality needed to effectively manage data at the point of activity.

Equipped with colour displays, the PDT 8000 device runs the Pocket PC 2002 operating system and, using a variety of WLAN and WWAN communications, makes it an useful tool for mobile workers, including field service and route accounting professionals.

Other features include:

* Designed to perform in harsh environments -withstands repeated drops to concrete and extreme variations in temperature.

* Incorporates an integrated laser bar code scanner.

* Incorporates 32-bit Intel PXA250 applications processor based on Intel Xscale technology.

* Incorporates Microsoft Pocket PC software for robust application development.

* Advanced video and audio capabilities.
