Here’s what Swire Cold Storage is doing

Swire Cold Storage has commenced the trial of the award-winning Desert Cube waterless urinal system at its site located in Lyndhurst, Victoria.

The system employs microbial technology and not only reduces urinal water usage by 98%, but also reduces harmful chemicals going down the drain, increases hygiene and saves money.

So how does it work?

The system is simple. All that needs to be done is for the water supply of the urinal to be turned off and a small blue Desert Cube placed at the base of each urinal.

The Desert Cubes consist of beneficial microbes or good bacteria that slowly dissolve over several weeks, breaking down uric scale (the cause of smell and unsightly stains in urinals) and any other organic matter that has gathered in the drains.

Because of the nature of the bacteria, the hard working microbes actually create a more hygienic environment than a flushing urinal. Urine itself does not produce the smell often associated with urinals, it is actually bacteria that it comes into contact with that form the uric scale that creates the smell.

Since bacteria thrive in a wet environment, flushing urinals only exacerbate the problem as each flush propels bacteria into the air. The airborne bacteria then settle onto the wet or damp surfaces and form colonies.

By creating a touch-free urinal, the Desert Cube system also prevents the transfer or pathogens to hands from the flushing mechanism.

As a water saver, the Desert Cube system requires only 4 litres of water to be poured down each urinal each day to flush away degraded matter and to activate the microbes/good bacteria contained in the Desert Cubes. This saves 151,000 litres of water per urinal per year. That is a lot of fresh drinking water saved from being flushed down the drain.

If the three-month trial is successful, the Desert Cube waterless urinal system will be rolled out to all Swire Cold Storage sites.
