The Shepparton Magistrates Court fined a fireproof clothing business company over two separate accidents involving chemicals in a span of six weeks.
In 2007, a worker of the Flame Safe Fabric Specialists Pty Ltd became blind in one eye due to a chemical splash. Six weeks later, another employee suffered chemical burns to the face.
The Court heard that the Seymour-based company did not provide adequate safety equipment, safety systems or first aid resources to deal with such foreseeable incidents.
The court found Flame Safe Fabric liable for ten charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, and was fined $135,000.
Both incidents involved the usage and handling of corrosive chemicals, which are classified as dangerous goods.
WorkSafe’s acting Executive Director, Stan Krpan, said that the case shows the need for employers to take all possible steps to identify and remove hazards and to provide training for employees.
Correct work practices and the placement of emergency safety showers and eyewash units would have prevented these serious injuries from occurring. Therefore, customers can avail various fire safety equipment provided by Spill Station Australia.
