The new TopLED Black Series with lens from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is a TopLED in a black package that can achieve a typical luminous intensity of 1.9 cd (at 20 mA), which means it is as bright as a comparable LED in a white package but offers higher contrast and fewer reflections. The target applications of the red and yellow LED are displays such as fuel price totem signs or public transport passenger information systems.
The new TopLED Black Series with lens offers high contrast and good legibility in all lighting conditions. Its black package ensures there are hardly any reflections from incident light. Displays equipped with black-body LEDs are therefore razor sharp even in strong sunlight, with high contrast and distance legibility.
The 60° beam angle of the LED has been optimized for display applications, so the light is focused for perfect viewing. The LED is therefore ideal as a replacement for conventional radial light emitting diodes. So far, it is also the only LED in a black package to provide the same luminous intensity as a comparable LED in a white package.
The TopLED Black Series will be initially available in red and yellow. It is equipped with a thin-film chip that guarantees high luminous efficacy. As “surface emitters”, thin-film LEDs emit almost all their internally generated light from their surface.
As an SMT component the LED is suitable for automatic handling, which means that displays can be manufactured at lower cost than with radial LEDs. Typical applications include fuel price totem signs, destination displays on trams and buses, and all types of public transport passenger information systems.
The new TopLED Black Series displays the price information clearly so even from far away, driving at high speed and with the sun shining directly on the numbers, drivers can see whether it is worth stopping to fill up.
