High Efficiency LED Drivers
The MIC3230/1/2 are constant current switching controllers that make designing high power, efficient LED drivers simple and economical. High power LEDs, such as the OSLON family from OSRAM, require a constant current source.

To maximise efficiency, a switch mode topology is needed. Control of the LED brightness is performed using a PWM function. According to the available power supply voltage and LED voltage drop, the controller may be operated in boost or SEPIC (buck boost) mode.

Features of the Micrel LED Drivers
  • Operates in Boost and SEPIC (Buck Boost) modes. This allows LED string voltages greater or less than the supply voltage
  • PWM dimming and separate enable shutdown, maximising flexibility
  • Spread Spectrum clock mode for up to 10dB lower EMI (MIC3231)
  • Onboard overvoltage protection, no external zener required
  • External MOSFET enables cost effective scalable topology, while still guaranteeing high efficiency

  • Programmable LED drive current, PWM dimming up to 500Hz
  • Capable of driving up to a massive 70W
  • 100kHz to 1MHz switching frequency, (MIC3232: 400kHz fixed)
  • 12 pin (3mm x 3mm) MLF®, 16 pin EPAD TSSOP packages (MIC3230/1) and 10 pin MSOP package (MIC3232)
