Seco Tools’ Duratomic process manipulates coating at the atomic level

Seco Tools AB  has announced the development of its Duratomic process, a revolutionary way of producing coatings that utilizes new process methods and crystallographic control to manipulate the coating at the atomic level.

Duratomic grew out of Seco Tools AB’s search to develop a grade with a new level of wear resistance and toughness, two characteristics that have always been diametrically opposed. The resulting Duratomic coating structure is much more durable because it features a unique combination of these two important parameters. This leads to increased productivity, reliability and improved surface finish.

Roger Granström, Seco product manager said, “What we have done is to alter the crystal structure of the aluminum oxide (AL2O3) layer to create a coating that offers long life and increased cutting capability. We believe this will totally change performance expectations of future grade developments.”

The first grade created with the Duratomic process is TP2500. According to Seco Tools AB, coatings developed with Duratomic technology can be married with any number of different substrates to create an entirely new generation of high performance grades.
